John Dalzell is a registered architect with over 20 years of design, building, and development experience in both the private and public sectors. He is Senior Architect with the Boston Redevelopment Authority, Boston’s planning and economic development agency (www.bostonredevelopmentauthority.org). In 2003, Mr. Dalzell served as the BRA’s senior staff to Mayor Menino’s Green Building Task Force, a real estate industry stakeholder group whose recommendations Mayor Menino employed in transforming Boston’s real estate development financing, planning, design, and construction practices.
Leading the BRA’s Green Building initiatives, Mr. Dalzell crafts public and internal sustainable development and green building policy including the January 2007 enactment of Boston’s Green Building zoning regulations which made Boston the first major city to require private developers to build green. Mr. Dalzell represents the BRA on the City’s Inter-Agency Green Building Committee, organizes green building trainings for staff, and managed the BRA Green Building Grant Program. As Senior Architect for Development Planning, Mr. Dalzell focuses City resources on sustainable development through several community based planning initiatives including; Housing on Main Street, Transit Oriented Planning, and the Boston Back Streets (industrial retention) program.
Mr. Dalzell is a member of the USGBC Board of Directors, a member of the USGBC’s LEED for Neighborhood Development Core Committee and a Founding Board Member of the Massachusetts USGBC chapter, the Massachusetts Membership Forum. He is a frequent speaker and has presented on sustainable development planning, district revitalization, green buildings and municipal policy.
