Presentation of RIDOT's efforts to integrate transportation innovations into our state, helping to ensure safety, expand mobility choices, and reduce negative environmental impacts.


Julia Gold recently joined the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) as the new Chief of Sustainability, Autonomous Vehicles, and Innovation. Before coming to RIDOT, Julia was the Climate Change Program Manager at the Rhode Island Department of Health. In her new role, Julia is working to ensure RIDOT is incorporating sustainability into its programs and investments, preventing and preparing for climate change (through emission reductions and resiliency efforts), as well as planning for transportation innovations and emerging technologies.

After receiving her B.A. from Brown University and her M.A. from Tufts University in Urban and Environmental Planning, Julia worked as a consultant for Tohn Environmental Strategies assisting clients with green building and energy efficiency strategies. She also served as the Director of the Green Center at Bristol Community College, where she oversaw the college’s workforce development programs in renewable energy and sustainability.

In addition to her work at the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, Julia is the Vice President of the ONE Neighborhood Builders board and is a member of the Providence Environmental Sustainability Task Force. She is the co-author of Principles of Brownfield Regeneration: Clean-up, design, and re-use of derelict land.
